Creative Arts and Games Design Portfolio

This is a small selection showcasing small parts of my work throughout year 1 and year 2 of my course of BTEC  L3 Extended Diploma in Games Development:

Year 1:

The first year of the course focused on the foundations of the creative industry, what makes the largest industry work and what it takes to allow it to operate the way it does. I researched all the key ingredients for what is essential to work in such a wide industry that provides such a large platform to be creative and inventive. Further into the year I looked into animation for a couple 2D plaform games that I created by the end of the year, here are several simple sprites made for the games and backgrounds for the sidescrollers, all was created in Adobe Photoshop and GameMaker,as they were made for a 2D plat-former the sprites are simple shapes:

Here is a small selection of the 2D sprites made in year one for a 2D Platform game, the game was simple and had one objective which was to reach the end whilst collecting treaure/gold coins.

(BlackJack)

At this time I also was asked to create a game concept and come up with the advertisement around the game, the piece received high praise and this was showcased to different students at the college. Using Adobe Photoshop to create the concept and the game case, this is what my imagination took me to:

The idea was to create a game concept that I would eventually like to develop or be involved with, my final idea was a game that told a strong story which would hook someone. Initially the idea came from the PlayStation game 'The Last Of Us' a apocalyptic setting, however my concept focused on an unknown virus that mutated wildlife and plants, making nature scarier than ever. We were asked to create a 'Load Screen' which would be apart of this game concept, I chose to edit pictures of cities, my idea is that this would have a lasting affect on a player seeing a real world image turn into a devastating afterthought.  I sampled a picture of a major US city, Seattle and edited the picture  to create this feeling.

'Day One' is the title of the concept, the idea behind it was that as you progress you experience the day to day struggle of the game.

A 'Screenshot' of one of the loading screens that would be featured.

All the images were created using Adobe Photoshop, the game information and images were taken online, from a free source, edited in various different ways to leave the impact I was aiming for. The image above would be the Game Case, the picture of the Eiffel Tower I edited in such as way to again display a real world icon being 'taken over' by nature. I added and colored the moss to highlight the concept of the game, the over taking of nature in the once human world.

Year 2:

This year we are focused on creating a 3D third person shooter/horror game, using Unreal Engine 4, Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Maya and 3DSMax. Currently I am creating a 3D human model which is the main character, which will be fully clothed and animated to interact with the surroundings. The game also includes Zombies, which again need to be different and versatile and again need to be fully animated to react to the surroundings.  A weapon, waterfall and a main building are also needed within the game.
